(New City, NY) – Supervisor George Hoehmann and the Town Board voted yesterday to appoint Bob Axelrod to fill the vacancy of former Councilman Pat Carroll who is now serving in the NYS Assembly. Axelrod is a retired Speech and Communication Professor at Rockland Community College.
“Bob has been a long time dedicated and active member of our community and I am proud to put him forward as the next Town Councilmember,” said Supervisor George Hoehmann. “The Town Board and I look forward to working with him as we continue to make Clarkstown a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
“I am honored for the opportunity to serve the people of Clarkstown,” said Councilman Axelrod. Thank you to Supervisor Hoehmann and the Town Board for appointing me and I look forward to working together for the residents of Clarkstown.”
Bob is a retired Professor of Speech from SUNY Rockland Community College, where he was employed for over 33 years, and where he had been awarded the SUNY “Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Service” in 2009. He had taught eight different courses in speech arts, as well as speech and language therapy, educating thousands of students during his time there. Bob coordinated a Speech and Hearing Clinic at the College that serviced hundreds of students and faculty with speech, language and hearing problems. He also developed a cutting-edge program in speech and language therapy, that upon completion, students had the opportunity to transfer seamlessly to a number of four-year college and university accredited programs in speech and language pathology. The clinic also supervised graduate students from these same colleges and universities, aspiring to become Speech and Language Pathologists. Earlier on at SUNY Rockland Bob was appointed Chairman of the “Middle States Reaccreditation Committee”, by the College President Neil Raisman, that successfully received reaccreditation upon completion.
Bob was also a member of the SUNY “Faculty Council of Community Colleges”, an umbrella governance body that represented all 30 SUNY Community Colleges and over 15,000 faculty, for over 18 years, culminating in being elected President from 2001-2003.
Locally, Bob was a member of the “Venture Foundation Board” for ten years, and a Trustee at the New City Library Board for the past nine years. He is also a steering committee member of the “Retired Public Employees Association” (RPEA), which advocates for public retired employees’ pensions, social security benefits and health care. Lastly, he is also a proud graduate of “Leadership Rockland”.
