New City, NY – On Tuesday, September 19th, Supreme Court Justice Thomas Zugibe issued a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) for the use and occupancy of 295 New Hempstead Rd., New City.
The Town was successful and diligent in obtaining the TRO after unprecedented code enforcement action that gathered enough evidence to first obtain a search warrant, and then to have a Supreme Court Judge order the house to be vacated and only operate as a single-family home. The Town will have another court hearing next Tuesday, September 26th, on this matter.
Supervisor George Hoehmann, said, “I look forward to fully adjudicating this in court and holding the owners of this property responsible. This continues to be reviewed and is under investigation.”
As a result of this action, the Rockland County codes initiative is investigating another property owned by the same owner Shloima Koppel in Spring Valley. The Town has received over 30 tips on other properties, which they are actively looking into. If you suspect a house is being used improperly, please report it on the 311 app or contact Supervisor Hoehmann at 845-639-2050 or the Building Department at 845-639-2100.
“In Clarkstown, we will enforce our codes and laws for the safety of our residents and first responders, said Supervisor George Hoehmann.” “We were fortunate here, to avoid a potential tragedy. The conditions in this home with 31 people living in the garage basement and a host of alleged building code violations was completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the Town.”
