Clarkstown Recognizes National Police Week
Pauses to remember those who serve and those we have lost
(New City, NY) – Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann and Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan today announced recognition of National Police Week. On Sunday, May 15, 2016, the Town’s flags were flown at half-staff in honor of those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. In addition, many municipalities, including Clarkstown, hold law enforcement memorial services.
“This week we express our gratitude to the men and women who bravely wear the uniform and badge; and selflessly put their lives on the line to ensure that we may all live in peace and security. We pause to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and pledge to honor their memory and devotion,” said Supervisor Hoehmann. “The men and women of the Clarkstown Police Department serve with honor, courage and distinction. They bring help in desperate hours and aid to the innocent. They symbolize the heroism and professionalism of law enforcement.”
“As we all go about our normal lives, we in law enforcement are humbled by those Officers who have given their lives in service to their communities,” said Clarkstown Police Chief Michael Sullivan. “During Police Memorial Week we are both saddened and proud to acknowledge those officers and their families who have sacrificed so much for all of us. This past Sunday the Clarkstown Police Department served as the lead Honor Guard at the Police Memorial service in Washington D.C. as we have done for the past 20 years. We also look forward to seeing everybody at the Rockland County Police Memorial service this Sunday.”
The Rockland County Chief’s Association will host the Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 11:00am in front of the Rockland County Court House, 1 South Main Street, New City. Prior to the Memorial Service, the Clarkstown Police Department will host an Awards Ceremony at 9:00am at the Clarkstown Police Department, 20 Maple Ave, New City. All residents are invited to attend.
