I am incredibly proud to announce the Town of Clarkstown will be saving taxpayers an
estimated $15,000 annually through the use of recently installed solar panels on the
roof at Town Hall. Clarkstown is now the first town, and only the second municipality in
Rockland to install a PV (solar) system on its municipal building. This is another
significant step forward in Clarkstown’s “green” initiatives that have been a hallmark of
my administration. In 2021, Clarkstown became the first municipality in Rockland to
earn an official NYSERDA designation as a Clean Energy Community and we continue
to aggressively pursue new ways to protect our environment and offer efficiency savings
to our taxpayers.
The new solar panels will generate approximately 135,510 kWh in the first year, which
will be consumed on-site or sent to the utility as part of New York State’s Value Stack
program. The system is expected to generate over $15,000 in annual savings during the
first year of operation while meeting just under 40% of Town Hall’s electricity needs.
The overall cost of this system will be greatly offset by rebates, savings, credits, and
incentives from various state and federal agencies.
I am really proud of what we have achieved in making Clarkstown a recognized leader
in initiating environmental-friendly policies and creating green infrastructure. From
preserving over 320 acres of open space to adopting a local law requiring a 10%
reduction in stormwater runoff on all new construction, Clarkstown has set the standard
for other municipalities to emulate when it comes to environmental responsibility.
Some of our most recent green initiatives include:
● 3,873 streetlights converted to LED technology
● LED conversion of all Town Hall Lighting
● New insulated roofs installed at Town Hall, Clarkstown Police HQ, and Street Community Center
● 4 EVs added to Town Fleet (partially paid for by NYSDEC grants)
● Energy efficient overhaul of the Central Nyack Community center
● 10 additional EV charging stations added at Town Hall
● 4 EV charging stations installed at Congers Lake Memorial Park
My goal has been to make Clarkstown the first municipality to have all of its municipal
electric needs met by renewable sources. We are well on the way to making that
happen!
